Our story

Right after the independence of India, four brothers (Debendra Kumar Ghosh, Amarendra Kumar Ghosh, Dhirendra Kumar Ghosh & Sachindra Kumar Ghosh from the rural Bengal small town of Katwa in Burdwan district) arrived at Kolkata (then Calcutta) with a bag full of dreams and practical hands-on knowledge of traditional bengali sweet making. In 1954, they opened up a sweet shop MITHAI at the crossing of Syed Amir Ali Avenue and Beckbagan Row. Right from the inception, customers got hooked to the items of Mithai which had exceptional quality and authentic taste. In no time, Mithai was fortunate enough to establish a loyal customer base who came from a wide spectrum of society and all sectors of economic, religious, political, and linguistic background. Soon after, Mithai turned into an iconic shop and a landmark for the city commuters.

One by one, the four founding brothers left for their heavenly abode. However, they infused the next generation with a single advice in order to live up to the legacy – “take care of the quality of the products and the quality will automatically take care of the finances”. Today, the third generation has stepped into the business with very many new and innovative products alongside the traditional ones but the guiding principle (from the founders) still remains the main motto.
